Attics are not a place where homeowners spend much time. In fact, you may have never been in your attic! Here’s why you should at least give it a check: attics are an ideal space for mold growth. Improper ventilation, leaks in your roof and improper indoor ventilation can cause mold to grow and spread. Eventually, if unnoticed and untreated, the mold may seep through your ceiling, at that point, it’s a big job to fix. Here are 3 ways to prevent attic mold before it begins!
3 Ways to Prevent Attic Mold
- Inspect your attic to see if it is ventilating properly. Your roof should have ventilation somewhere whether in the roof or eves to allow heat to escape. If you can’t spot any vents, you’ll need to put some in to let the heat and moisture escape so that mold does not start to grow.
- Check your roof for leaks. Keeping your gutters clean and your roof clear of debris can help prevent leaking. If there is damage to the roof and water is seeping into your attic, this is the best condition for mold to grow: warm and moist. The best time to check is after a rain event, you’ll clearly be able to see if any leaks are coming into the attic.
- Check your indoor vents to see where they are exhausting. If it is into the attic, that is a big no-no. Have a professional redirect the vent to exhaust outside and save you the extra heat and moisture in your attic as well as to keep you safe.
Of course, prevention is key, but what if you already have mold in your attic?
